Poppy the Puffin

Who is Poppy? 


Similar to Smokey the Bear, Poppy the Puffin ‘What’s SUP with single-use plastic?’ reproduces effective communication strategies that introduce a likable mascot to elicit behavior change. 

"Our research question investigates whether the use of the educational program in elementary schools helps to build support and bring attention to legislative policy to establish the need for bans and rebate programs in city, county and state government."

Poppy the Puffin is the mascot of an elementary school educational program which seeks to encourage mindful consumption and awareness of issues surrounding excessive single-use plastic waste.

 

Our research question considers the effectiveness of educational programs like these in raising awareness of and support for policy solutions to the problems presented by marine debris and plastic pollution.

Published Research Findings:
"...the feedback loop, reciprocal determinism, may predict positive behavior, by implementing educational programs in schools in order to reduce the use of single-use plastic and marine debris."
